Coinbase Plans to Expand ‘Everything Exchange’ into Canada with Stocks, Crypto and Prediction Markets

Coinbase is preparing to launch its “Everything Exchange” in Canada, bringing together cryptocurrency, stock trading and prediction markets on a single platform, according to the company’s Canadian chief executive.

Lucas Matheson, CEO of Coinbase Canada, told Decrypt that the expansion represents “phase two” for the company’s Canadian operations, though no launch date has been set.

The Everything Exchange was first introduced in the United States last year, allowing users to trade multiple asset classes without switching between platforms. The service combines traditional equities trading with cryptocurrency and prediction market contracts.

Regulatory Path Forward

The Canadian expansion comes as Coinbase navigates different regulatory frameworks across North America. While the company has faced scrutiny from the US Securities and Exchange Commission, it holds a restricted dealer licence in Canada through the country’s provincial securities regulators.

Prediction markets, which allow users to bet on the outcomes of political events, sports results and other occurrences, have seen renewed interest following their approval in the United States. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission greenlit these markets for US users in 2024.

Matheson did not specify whether Canadian regulators have approved all components of the Everything Exchange, or what regulatory hurdles remain before launch.

Competing in a Consolidated Market

If successful, the move would position Coinbase as a direct competitor to traditional Canadian brokerages and other cryptocurrency exchanges operating in the country.

Canada has maintained a relatively open approach to cryptocurrency regulation compared to its southern neighbour, with several exchanges holding provincial licences. The country was also an early adopter of Bitcoin exchange-traded funds, approving the first such product in 2021.

Coinbase entered the Canadian market in 2021 and has since worked to expand its regulatory permissions. The company reported 9.5 million monthly transacting users globally in its most recent earnings report, though it does not break out Canadian figures separately.

The Everything Exchange model reflects a broader trend in financial services toward platform consolidation, where companies seek to become the primary interface for multiple asset classes. Traditional brokerages like Interactive Brokers and Robinhood have pursued similar strategies, adding cryptocurrency trading to their stock and options offerings.

For Coinbase, expanding the Everything Exchange beyond US borders represents a test of whether the multi-asset model can succeed in markets with different regulatory structures and competitive dynamics.

The company has not disclosed what infrastructure or partnerships would be required to enable stock trading in Canada, or whether it would custody securities directly or work with third-party clearing firms.
