Circle expands blockchain portfolio with acquisition of IBM patents

Circle has strengthened its position in the blockchain industry after acquiring IBM’s extensive blockchain patent portfolio, a deal that makes the USDC issuer the largest holder of blockchain patents in the United States.

The acquisition marks one of the largest transfers of blockchain intellectual property in recent years and signals Circle’s ambitions to expand beyond stablecoins into broader blockchain infrastructure. Although the companies did not disclose the financial terms of the deal, Circle said the patents will support its long-term strategy of building financial infrastructure for the internet economy.

The portfolio includes more than 680 patent families and nearly 1,000 issued patents covering blockchain technology, banking, financial services, insurance, enterprise infrastructure, supply chain verification and secure cloud operations. The breadth of the portfolio reflects IBM’s years of investment in enterprise blockchain research before the company shifted more of its focus toward artificial intelligence and hybrid cloud computing.

IBM was one of the earliest technology companies to invest heavily in enterprise blockchain solutions. Over the past decade, it developed blockchain platforms for industries such as banking, trade finance, logistics, healthcare and supply chain management, building one of the largest blockchain patent portfolios in the process.

For Circle, the acquisition goes far beyond increasing the number of patents it owns. The company said the intellectual property will help accelerate innovation across its growing suite of blockchain products, including USDC, the Circle Payments Network (CPN), Arc, and future on-chain financial services.

Circle has become one of the leading companies in the digital asset industry through USDC, one of the world’s largest dollar-backed stablecoins. The stablecoin is widely used for cross-border payments, digital trading, decentralized finance (DeFi) and tokenized financial applications. In recent years, the company has also expanded its focus to infrastructure that enables businesses and financial institutions to move money using blockchain technology.

The acquisition comes as competition in blockchain infrastructure continues to intensify. Rather than focusing only on cryptocurrencies, companies are increasingly investing in technologies that support tokenized assets, digital payments, digital identity, compliance and enterprise-grade financial systems.

Industry observers say the deal also highlights the growing importance of intellectual property in the blockchain sector. As blockchain technology matures, patents are becoming strategic assets that can support product development, strengthen competitive advantages and create opportunities for future licensing and commercial partnerships.

While Circle has not announced immediate plans for each patent, the company said the portfolio will play an important role in developing the next generation of blockchain-based financial products. The acquisition aligns with its broader vision of building trusted, internet-native financial infrastructure that connects traditional finance with blockchain technology.

The deal also reflects a broader trend across the technology industry, where companies are increasingly acquiring intellectual property to strengthen their position in fast-growing sectors such as blockchain and artificial intelligence. By taking ownership of one of the industry’s largest patent portfolios, Circle is positioning itself to play a bigger role in shaping how blockchain technology is used across global financial markets.

With the acquisition now complete, Circle not only gains access to decades of enterprise blockchain research but also secures a significant competitive advantage as demand continues to grow for secure, compliant and scalable blockchain infrastructure.
