Ethereum is preparing to let users transact without holding ETH for gas, potentially allowing someone with only USDC or another supported stablecoin to send funds on the network.
The feature comes through EIP-8141, known as Frame Transactions, which Ethereum developers have scheduled for the Hegotá upgrade planned for 2027.
Under the proposal, an app, wallet or other account could pay the network fee in ETH on behalf of a user and receive stablecoins from that user in return. That means someone could hold $100 in USDC but zero ETH and still send the USDC without first buying ETH to cover the transaction fee.
How Frame Transactions work
EIP-8141 changes how Ethereum transactions are structured by separating transaction validation, gas payment and execution into different frames.
This separation allows the account authorising a transaction to be different from the account paying its gas.
For example, a wallet could let a user approve a USDC transfer while a sponsoring account pays the Ethereum network in ETH. The sponsor could then receive USDC from the user as reimbursement.
From the user’s perspective, the transaction can therefore be paid for in stablecoins even though Ethereum’s underlying network fee is still settled in ETH.
The feature could remove one of the biggest friction points for people using Ethereum-based stablecoins: having to keep a small ETH balance solely to pay transaction fees.
More than stablecoin gas payments
Frame Transactions are designed to support more than alternative gas payments. The structure can combine multiple operations into a single transaction, allowing applications to handle actions such as approvals and swaps together rather than requiring users to approve each step separately.
EIP-8141 also introduces more flexible transaction authorisation, allowing accounts to change the mechanisms they use to authorise transactions without necessarily moving their funds to a new address.
That could eventually make it easier for wallets to adopt stronger security mechanisms, including cryptographic systems designed to protect against future quantum-computing threats.
Hegotá is targeted for 2027
Ethereum developers moved EIP-8141 into the scheduled list for Hegotá during their August 27, 2026 coordination call.
However, the feature is not available on Ethereum mainnet yet. The EIP remains a draft and still needs implementation, testing and security review before deployment.
Hegotá will follow the Glamsterdam upgrade, with Ethereum’s 2027 roadmap still subject to further development and testing. If EIP-8141 reaches mainnet as planned, users would no longer need to think about ETH as a prerequisite for every Ethereum transaction.
For stablecoin users, that could make Ethereum feel less like a blockchain that requires knowledge of its native token and more like a payment network where the asset being sent can also cover the cost of the transaction.
