Web browsing is becoming less about searching and more about execution. As AI tools mature, the focus is shifting toward reducing repetitive actions and turning everyday tasks into automated workflows.
Google has announced its advancement in that direction with the introduction of “Skills” in Google Chrome,a feature that allows users to turn AI prompts into reusable, one-click tools directly within the browser.
The feature is built on Google’s Gemini integration in Chrome. Users can run a prompt through Gemini, such as summarising a page, comparing products, or analysing content, and then save that prompt as a “Skill.” Once saved, the same instruction can be triggered instantly on any webpage without rewriting or copying it again.
The workflow is designed to be simple. After using Gemini in Chrome’s side panel, users can save a prompt from their chat history. The saved Skill can later be activated by typing a forward slash ( / ) or selecting it from the interface. When triggered, it runs on the current page or across multiple open tabs, pulling and analysing information in real time.
This multi-tab capability is a key part of how the system works. Instead of handling one page at a time, a single Skill can scan several tabs simultaneously, for example, comparing product specifications across different websites or extracting insights from multiple documents at once.
Google is also introducing a built-in library of pre-made Skills to lower the barrier to entry. These include common use cases such as summarising long documents, analysing recipes, or comparing options when shopping. Users can adopt these templates as they are or modify them to suit specific needs.
Control and safety remain part of the design. Skills operate under the same safeguards as Gemini in Chrome, meaning the system will request user confirmation before taking sensitive actions such as sending emails or adding calendar events.
The feature is rolling out to desktop users on Chrome, with availability tied initially to English-language settings. Saved Skills are linked to a user’s Google account, allowing them to sync across devices where Chrome is signed in.
This development builds on Google’s broader effort to integrate AI directly into everyday tools. Rather than introducing entirely new capabilities, Skills streamline existing ones, removing the need to repeat prompts and making AI interactions faster and more consistent. Chrome is no longer just a place to access information, it is becoming a workspace where tasks can be defined once and executed repeatedly.
