Telegram has returned to Apple’s App Store after briefly disappearing from the platform worldwide, ending hours of uncertainty over one of the world’s most widely used messaging apps.
The app was removed from the iOS App Store on Monday, making it unavailable for new downloads in many countries. However, users who already had Telegram installed on their iPhones were still able to use the app normally during the outage.
The temporary removal quickly sparked speculation online, as neither Apple nor Telegram initially explained why the app had disappeared.
Apple later confirmed that it had temporarily taken down Telegram after identifying content that violated its policies on child sexual abuse material (CSAM). According to the company, the app was restored after Telegram removed the offending content and banned the user who posted it.
Telegram also confirmed that the app had returned to the App Store, posting on X that reports suggesting the platform had been removed permanently were inaccurate.
The incident comes as technology companies face increasing pressure from regulators and app store operators to strengthen content moderation and respond more quickly to illegal material shared on their platforms. Apple requires developers to comply with its App Store Review Guidelines, which prohibit apps from hosting or facilitating the distribution of child sexual abuse material and other illegal content.
Although the removal lasted only a short time, it highlighted how even major platforms can temporarily lose access to Apple’s marketplace if they are found to be in breach of the company’s policies. The App Store remains the only official way for iPhone users to download apps on iOS, making temporary removals significant for companies that depend on mobile users.
Telegram has faced growing regulatory scrutiny in several countries over the way content is moderated on its platform. Governments and regulators have repeatedly called on the company to take stronger action against illegal content while balancing its commitment to user privacy and encrypted communications.
The latest incident does not appear to have affected Telegram’s existing users, and the app is once again available for download through Apple’s App Store.
