Apple explores stablecoin payments as crypto enters mobile wallets

Apple may be exploring stablecoin payments for Apple Pay as digital currencies become part of the financial services strategies of major technology companies.

The development follows a job listing for an Apple Pay Financial Product Strategy Lead, which includes knowledge of stablecoins, tokenized deposits and blockchain technology among its preferred qualifications.

The role offers a base salary of up to $280,000. However, Apple has not confirmed plans to introduce cryptocurrency payments through Apple Pay.

Why Apple might be exploring stablecoins

Stablecoins could give Apple another way to expand its financial services, including payments, money transfers and cross-border transactions.

Unlike cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, stablecoins are designed to maintain a relatively stable value, usually by being linked to a fiat currency such as the US dollar. This makes them more suitable for payment and settlement applications where users and businesses need predictable values.

Apple’s financial services team already works on products such as Apple Cash, peer-to-peer transfers and other payment services. Its job listing says the new hire will assess growth opportunities, develop business cases and evaluate potential partnerships across Apple Pay, Wallets, Payments and Commerce.

The inclusion of stablecoin expertise suggests Apple wants to understand how emerging payment technologies could fit into its future financial products. It does not confirm that the company has chosen a specific stablecoin or payment model.

If Apple eventually introduces stablecoin support, users could potentially use digital assets for transfers, fund payments or access other financial services through Apple Wallet. One possible approach would involve converting stablecoins into traditional currency before a merchant receives payment. Another could involve partnerships with stablecoin issuers and payment providers that manage transactions and settlement.

Apple has not disclosed which approach it may consider, and the job listing does not provide a launch date or details about supported assets.

Samsung is also exploring stablecoin payments

Apple’s reported interest comes as Samsung is also linked to plans involving stablecoin features for Samsung Wallet.

Samsung’s wallet already supports payment cards and other digital services. Adding stablecoin functionality could allow the company to connect digital assets with its existing mobile payment ecosystem, although details about the proposed feature and its rollout remain limited.

The developments from both companies show how stablecoins are attracting attention beyond cryptocurrency exchanges and dedicated blockchain applications.

A potential market of billions of devices

Apple and Samsung have a combined presence across billions of mobile devices worldwide. If either company introduces stablecoin payment functionality, its existing wallet infrastructure could provide a route for digital assets to reach more consumers.

However, the number of devices does not automatically translate into active stablecoin users. Adoption would depend on supported countries, payment partners, regulations, merchant acceptance and how easily users can access the service.

For now, Apple’s job listing signals interest in stablecoin and blockchain expertise, but it does not confirm that crypto payments are coming to Apple Pay.

Any future launch would need an official announcement explaining the supported assets, payment process and markets where the feature would be available.
