Apple tests multiple smart glasses designs ahead of expected 2027 launch

Apple’s long-anticipated entry into the smart glasses market is taking clearer shape, as the company tests multiple design directions for a product that could redefine its next hardware category. 

According to recent reports, Apple is currently evaluating at least four different frame styles for its upcoming smart glasses, highlighting how seriously it is approaching both functionality and design. 

The prototypes under consideration range from large rectangular frames,similar to Ray-Ban Wayfarers,to slimmer rectangular designs inspired by glasses worn by CEO Tim Cook. The company is also exploring both large and smaller oval or circular frames, alongside multiple colour options such as black, ocean blue, and light brown.

This level of variation is not accidental. Apple is treating the product as both a technology device and a fashion accessory, recognising that eyewear adoption depends heavily on comfort and personal style. Reports indicate the company is experimenting with premium materials like acetate to ensure the glasses feel closer to luxury eyewear than conventional gadgets. 

Functionally, the glasses are expected to focus on everyday utility rather than immersive augmented reality. Unlike the company’s Vision Pro headset, the smart glasses are not expected to include a display. Instead, they will likely feature built-in cameras, microphones, and speakers, allowing users to take photos, answer calls, listen to music, and interact with an upgraded version of Siri. 

The product is also expected to work closely with the iPhone, relying on it for processing and connectivity. This positions the glasses more as an extension of Apple’s existing ecosystem rather than a standalone device, similar to how the Apple Watch was initially introduced. 

Apple’s cautious approach reflects lessons from earlier hardware efforts. The Vision Pro, while technically advanced, faced criticism over pricing and practicality, limiting its mainstream appeal. With smart glasses, the company appears focused on delivering a lighter, more accessible product that can be worn throughout the day. 

Timing remains fluid, but reports suggest Apple could unveil the product as early as late 2026, with a commercial launch targeted for 2027. The broader context is competitive. Companies like Meta and Google are already investing heavily in wearable AI devices, particularly glasses that integrate cameras and voice assistants. Apple’s multi-design testing signals that it is not just entering the market,but aiming to define its direction through design, ecosystem integration, and user experience. If successful, the product could mark Apple’s next major hardware category,one that moves computing further away from handheld devices and closer to always-on, ambient interaction.
