Base, Coinbase’s Ethereum Layer-2 network, has unveiled plans to evolve its core technology by adopting a unified Base-maintained software stack. This marks a strategic shift from relying on the Optimism OP Stack to a system that Base itself will build, control, and upgrade more frequently. The goal is to make the network more efficient, easier for developers to build on, and faster to iterate on new features.

Under the new approach, Base will reduce complexity in its codebase by consolidating dependencies and maintaining its own releases. This should help node operators, contributors, and developers by simplifying deployment and reducing barriers to participation. Importantly, the team plans to maintain compatibility with existing tooling and infrastructure , meaning developers can continue using familiar interfaces while Base upgrades under the hood.

One of the key ambitions of this change is to increase the cadence of upgrades. The Base team is targeting up to six network releases per year, which is double the previous pace. Developers will benefit from more frequent improvements and faster responses to issues or opportunities.
