Coinbase has acknowledged that its artificial intelligence system generated and sent a false alert about the outcome of a FIFA Women’s World Cup match before the game had even started, according to a report by Decrypt.
The exchange said it has since updated its systems to prevent similar errors after the AI-generated notification incorrectly reported the result of a Norway versus Brazil match ahead of kickoff.
What happened
The incident involved an automated alert system that appeared to rely on AI-generated content to notify users of sports results. Instead of waiting for the match to conclude, the system fabricated an outcome and distributed it to users.
AI hallucination refers to instances where artificial intelligence systems generate false or nonsensical information presented as fact. The phenomenon has become a growing concern as companies increasingly deploy large language models and generative AI across customer-facing services.
Coinbase did not immediately specify how many users received the erroneous alert or what the falsely reported score was. The company confirmed to Decrypt that it had addressed the issue by making changes to its notification infrastructure.
The incident highlights the risks of deploying AI systems in live, real-time environments without adequate safeguards. While generative AI has shown promise in automating customer communications and content generation, its tendency to produce false information when uncertain remains a persistent challenge.
Major technology companies have faced similar issues. Google’s Bard chatbot and Microsoft’s Bing AI have both been documented producing factually incorrect responses. In financial services, where accuracy and trust are paramount, such errors carry additional reputational risk.
Coinbase, one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the United States, has been expanding its use of AI across various operations. The company has not disclosed the full extent of AI integration in its customer notification systems.
Industry response
The crypto industry has been among the most enthusiastic adopters of AI technology, with exchanges, wallet providers, and blockchain analytics firms racing to incorporate machine learning and generative AI into their platforms.
However, regulatory scrutiny of AI systems is intensifying globally. The European Union’s AI Act, which came into force in August 2024, establishes strict requirements for high-risk AI applications. While sports notifications may not qualify as high risk, financial services applications face heightened oversight.
Coinbase did not provide details on whether the AI system in question was developed in-house or licensed from a third-party vendor. The company also did not clarify whether human review processes were bypassed in the alert generation workflow.
As AI systems become more embedded in consumer-facing financial applications, the incident serves as a reminder that automation must be balanced with verification mechanisms to maintain accuracy and user trust.
