X moves closer to letting users trade crypto from posts

X is preparing to let users buy and sell crypto directly from posts.

According to Bier, former X head of product Nikita disclosed the feature in a reply to an X user who claimed that the crypto bull market could begin now that Bier was no longer “shadow banning” Crypto Twitter.

The exchange began when an X user,  pattchxbt, posted that the “Bull Market is allowed to commence” because Bier was no longer suppressing crypto accounts on X.

Bier pushed back on the claim, pointing to the crypto features he helped build during his time at X.He also pointed out that users can already paste contract addresses for newly launched tokens into X posts.

The exchange provides the first clear indication that X intends to take its crypto features beyond displaying market information and towards enabling users to execute trades from the platform.

From crypto charts to trading

X’s Cashtags feature already allows users to view crypto market information within posts. The feature supports Solana and Ethereum charts and can recognise contract addresses for newly launched tokens.

The planned trade buttons would add another layer to the feature by allowing users to move from viewing a token in their timeline to initiating a buy or sell order.

That could reduce the need for users to leave X after discovering a token or discussing it in a post.

However, Bier did not provide a launch date, explain which cryptocurrencies would be supported, or identify the exchange, broker, or other platform that would execute the trades.

It is therefore not yet clear whether X would execute the trades itself or connect users to an external trading provider.

The announcement came during a debate over crypto on X

The disclosure was not made as a formal product announcement.

Instead, Bier revealed the upcoming feature while responding to a post accusing him of suppressing Crypto Twitter.

In his response, Bier defended X’s work on crypto products and said there had been no dedicated crypto-trading features on the platform before he joined.

He also rejected the idea that X was responsible for the current crypto market rally.

Bier attributed the market move instead to US Treasury bond buybacks and what he described as dollar debasement. That part of his response was separate from the announcement about the upcoming trading buttons.

The planned trade buttons would build on X’s existing financial features rather than introduce crypto trading from scratch.

Cashtags already bring crypto price information into the social feed, while contract address support allows users to look up newly minted tokens directly in posts.

The addition of buy and sell buttons would connect those discovery tools to trading. Still, the feature remains unlaunched. There is no confirmed release date, list of supported assets or information yet on how trades will be processed. For now, Bier’s post is the confirmation that X is working towards adding direct crypto trading functionality to its timeline.
