Kenya launches national digital token on Solana

Date:

In the Kenyan Cabinet, Information, Communications and the Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary, William Kabogo has formally announced on July 13, 2025, the launch of the Kenya Digital Token (KDT), a privately developed national digital asset built on the Solana blockchain.

The announcement was shared through a statement and video on X, reflecting government support without direct issuance from the state. The event signals a strategic collaboration between Kenya’s Ministry of Information, Communications and the Digital Economy (MICDE) and private innovators under the Meteora platform, symbolising national identity and digital transformation.

In his public address, Kabogo described KDT as a “citizen‑first innovation”, aimed at promoting financial inclusion, youth empowerment, and community-led value creation. He emphasised that although not recognised as legal tender, KDT aligns with Kenya’s Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASP) Bill and forthcoming virtual assets policy, representing a policy shift from caution to leadership in blockchain and stablecoin regulation.

By choosing Solana for its speed and low transaction costs, developers have integrated a suite of tools, preinstalled digital wallets, AR‑based education modules, and on‑chain rewards, targeting underserved communities like Kibera. The token aims to onboard Kenya’s 55 million citizens into digital finance, harnessing real‑world Web3 applications.

Financially, the nation’s crypto ecosystem already records over  $500 million in monthly trading volume. Officials intend to leverage KDT to channel these existing financial flows into structured, regulated frameworks and potentially national reserves. KDT also holds promise for improving remittances and digital trade, backed by the recent rollout of the RTX Wallet to streamline cross-border transfers.

Moving forward, MICDE plans ongoing engagement with regulators, innovators, and the Central Bank of Kenya to establish governance structures, explore pegging methods, and ensure consumer protection. This launch positions Kenya as a trailblazer in Africa’s Web3 transformation, demonstrating how public endorsement and private innovation can drive citizen‑centric digital economies.
