A long-running debate inside the TON ecosystem has reached a decisive moment, as Toncoin holders have voted in favour of renaming the network’s native asset from Toncoin (TON) to Gram (GRAM), reviving a name first introduced in the project’s original white paper.
The proposal, which entered community voting on June 1, secured 81.22% approval from participating token holders, clearing the threshold required for implementation. The change is scheduled to take effect on June 15, according to governance updates shared within the TON community.
The vote marks one of the most symbolic branding decisions in the project’s history, reconnecting the blockchain with its early Telegram-era design vision.
A return to TON’s original identity
The name “Gram” is not new to the TON ecosystem. It traces back to the project’s original concept, the Telegram Open Network, where “Gram” was intended to serve as the native token before regulatory pressure forced Telegram to abandon the initiative in 2020.
After Telegram exited the project, the network evolved under the independent TON Foundation and community developers, with the token eventually rebranded as Toncoin.
Despite the rebrand, the original terminology never fully disappeared from technical documentation and early code references, where “Gram” continued to appear in legacy elements of the ecosystem.
The latest proposal argues that restoring the name aligns the network more closely with its original architecture and narrative, while also improving brand consistency across products built around Telegram’s ecosystem.
How the vote unfolded
The governance process began on June 1, when TON holders were asked to decide whether to adopt the Gram branding. The proposal quickly gained traction among community participants, driven by long-standing sentiment that the original name better reflects the project’s history and design intent.
According to results shared by the community, 81.22% of votes were cast in favour of the change, surpassing the required majority threshold. The remaining votes were either against or abstained, reflecting a smaller but notable group of holders who preferred maintaining the existing Toncoin identity.
Once implemented, the change is expected to affect token naming across wallets, exchanges, developer documentation, and ecosystem applications built on TON infrastructure.
TON has grown significantly in recent years, positioning itself as a high-performance Layer-1 blockchain closely integrated with Telegram’s user base. The network is designed for fast transactions, low fees, and consumer-scale adoption through messaging-based interfaces.
Supporters of the rename argue that aligning the token with its original identity could strengthen narrative continuity at a time when TON is expanding its ecosystem footprint through payments, mini apps, and Telegram-native services.
However, branding changes at the protocol level also carry operational challenges. Exchanges, wallets, and infrastructure providers will need to update listings and integrations, while developers must adjust references across applications and smart contract interfaces where necessary.
